Work Choices
December 3rd 2006 23:42
I don't know if anyone outside of Australia knows what's happening in our once cool country.
Thanks to John Howard, and the new industrial relations laws (considerably worse then those that were recently introduced and then repealed in France), workes rights have been... well, workers now have no rights.
They can be sacked without reason, assuming the business employs less then 200 people (I'm pretty sure it's 200, it may be more or less), and they can be sacked by email, text messege, whatever.
They have lost the right to form unions to collectively bargain for their pay - which is the only way to balance the power of the employee in negotiating. Now if a worker demands a decent wage, the employee can fire them and hire someone who is willing to work for shit all. People can now be fined or jailed for forming unions, or taking any form of collective strike or meeting.
Under the new welfare to work program, stolen from America, people on welfare must take any job offered, even if the pay is ludicrously low.
The intro aside, there was recently a rally. (no burning of cars - alas), and, It was pretty informative really, and probably the most important thing I learnt was that labour has promised to overturn the new laws, and bring back a system similar to the good old days.
So what am I asking of you??
Vote Labour, either first, or at least preference them ahead of the liberals.
Attend lots of rallys
If a job pays too little, don't take it. (obviously, if your options are taking the job or your family starving, then take the job, and then get revenge of that bastard of an employee by voting to overturn these laws that he no doubt loves (ie for The Greens or Labour)
Peace

I have one life motto , something like :
" Don't complain too much . Even when you think situation is the worst possible , believe me , it could be even worse."
Bye

Yes, Australia is better then Serbia in terms of rights, and I do feel sorry for you, but why should that stop me trying to improve the situation in Australia?

Or is it a case where all the major parties are carbon copies of each other?

Btw , I'm glad you have info about elections in my country. I will not vote unless I made some bet on our elections ( that's I actually did last time
