Week 1: The Living End

June 5th 2008 23:41
Each week I’m going to post a post (he he) about one of my favourite bands or artists. These can range from the likes of Joy Division, The Clash, Johnny Cash, Linkin Park, The Distillers and this weeks band THE LIVING END.

(please note these are by no means a full history of the bands, just the bits that I find interesting lol).

------

The Living End hails from Melbourne Australia and are in my opinion one of the most under rated bands in the country. I think because they aren’t involved with drugs (not that I am aware of anyway – I don’t know any of the members of the band personally), their love lives are private as are their private lives. Its all about the music, as it should be.

The Living End

The band consists of three members Chris Cheney (vocals, guitar), Scott Owen (double bass, vocals) and Andy Strachan (drums). Previously the band had two other drummers with Strachan joining the band in 2003.

With the original line up Cheney and Owen formed in 1994 with Joey Piripitzi on drums until 1996 when he was replaced by Travis Demsey who stayed with the band until 2002.

Their big break came when Cheney sent a band t-shirt and a demo to Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, the band was then, and has done many times since supported Green Day on their Australian tours.

In total they have released four studio albums and one ‘singles compilation’ album. They have had a number of singles released with the most famous and the one that really put them on the map the double A side "Second Solution/Prisoner of Society."

The single garnered a huge following in Australia and a lot of air play on alternative rock station Triple J.

The band played a number of big festivals in Australia (Big Day Out, Splendor in the Grass) and overseas (Vans Warped Tour, Reading Festival) and started to get a following not only in Australia but in Europe and the US as well.

To date Second Solution/Prisoner of Society is one of the highest selling singles in Australian history and stayed a staggering 47 in the Australian charts.

Following their ‘Roll On’ album in 2000 the band appeared on Conan and Letterman in the US and are regulars on the Warped Tour. They have won a number of local awards including ARIAS and Jack awards.

However the bands success was slowed in 2001 when Cheney was in a serious car accident driving on the Great Ocean Road with his partner. While his partner had only minor injuries Cheney’s leg was shattered. He was unable to play for a long period of time which put a stop to the bands busy touring schedule and promotions for ‘Roll On.’
The bands links to Billie Joe Armstrong continue with them signing to his American record label Adeline Records along with Eastwest Records for US releases for the release of the next album in 2004 State of Emergency album. The band followed this up with extensive touring around the globe.

The band spent much of the next few years touring until around the middle of 2007 when they started looking forward to writing and recording the new album ‘White Noise’ – due for the release in on the 19th July 2008.

A number of the songs have been sampled live and received good feed back from fans. Recording of the album has taken place at Water Music Studios in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Cheney has also done a few collaborations the most notable as The Wrights performing ‘Evie Parts 1, 2 & 3’ – the band also featured Jet’s Nic Cester. He also played guitar and vocals on Sarah McLeods (Superjesus) debut solo album on the song ‘Private School Kid.’ He also performed ‘I fought the Law’ with Green Day at their Melbourne concert in 2005.
TLE - Live

Now why do I like them? Coz they straight out rock. I’ve been lucky enough to see them live a few times and they are one of those few bands that when you see the live and hear them live your impressed, you know? The sound is good, the music works and they can really read a crowd and get you going.

Another thing I like about them and I can only really do this with Linkin Park to, is that when ever I don’t know what to listen to I can put these guys on and its ALWAYS a great choice…. Not sure if that makes sense but hey.
