Virgin Festival

July 18th 2006 07:03
As much as it annoys me, advertising something that is essentially a heartless corporation pretending to give a damn about music to sell their crappy mobiles, the Virgin Festival has traditionally only been held in the USA, but this year is also holding a more minor show in Canada.

The US show, on the 23rd has the bands
The Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Who
The Killers
Flaming Lips
The Raconteurs
Gnarls Barkley
Scissor Sisters
Keane
Thievery Corporation
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
New Pornographers
Drive-by Truckers
Kasabian
Brazilian Girls

Wolfmother
Tiesto
John Digweed
Carl Cox
RJD2
2 Many DJs
James Holden

Now, why are the Killers above the Flaming Lips? Honestly.

The Chili Willies and the Who would be awesome to see, and the Flaming Lips would be great live - the closest thing us poor young shmucks can get to the Psychadelic Rock of Hendrix. Scissor Sisters are always good. I thought Wolfmother were Australian, to be honest. I'm a little surprised to see them on that list. Unless I'm thinking of some other band..

From my vast knowledge of the New Pornographers, which I gained in the last minute and a half, I'd be interested to see them live. They're a mix of pop, rock and techno, but somehow, in a good way. Maybe I'll listen to some more of the stuff on their site (if I can stand listenign to 20kbps audio files much longer)

The Canadian Show is on 2 stages, instead of 3 but goes over two days (September 9th and 10th) and features pretty much the same bands, but without the Chili Peppers and the Who

Day 1
THE FLAMING LIPS
GNARLS BARKLEY
ALEXISONFIRE

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL
THE DEARS
THE HIDDEN CAMERAS
STARSAILOR
PHOENIX
BUCK 65
PLASTER

Day 2
MASSIVE ATTACK
THE RACONTEURS
SAM ROBERTS BAND
WOLFMOTHER
THRICE
ZERO 7
K'NAAN
JOSE GONZALEZ
We are Wolves
MICKEY AVALON

Sorry for all caps, I copied it direct off the site and am much to lazy to fix it.

I gotta say, congrats to the man who decided that Massive Attack should play. As much as I hate the name of the genre, Trip Hop (it just sounds so phoney) the bands themselves are often pretty good, as is the case for Massive Attack.

Wolfmother is an Australian bandf but they are probably one of the most succesful acts to come out of Australia in the past ten years, Ben Lee, Wolfmother and the Veronicas are really the only Australian acts to get a good base in the USA and the UK and Australia (Jet was really only recognized by the tag of "the iPod ad band"
