Top 10 Punk Covers
May 2nd 2006 04:58
So many of the good punk covers around were written by non-Punk bands - Nothing to do with Punks finding it hard to write meanignful songs, surely...
At number 10, we have 'Lake of Fire', originally sung by 'The Meat Puppets', but made famous, (in fact, most people assume they wrote it) and given rythym, by 'Nirvana'. This gets in because it is a good song, not overly punk but worth a listen to.
in slot 9, more for comic and punk value then musical or songwriting ability, is 'Rock Around the Clock' - the famous 'Bill Haley and the Comets' song, covered by the 'Sex Pistols'
8th is 'Rebel, Rebel' written by the King of Glam Rock, David Bowie, and sung by Iggy Pop - the strange mix of Glam Rock and Punk. The song has a nice rythym and general feel to it.
7 goes to another Bowie cover, Five Years, and is sung by Placebo. This song has a great deal of meaning and emotion, due to its author, and Brian Molko's (lead signer of Placebo) voice is suited to the song perfectly.
In 6th place - Love Will Tear us Apart - written by Joy Division and sung by The Cure. It truly is a nice song to listen to, but I just couldn't put a love song in the top 5.
5th - Subterranean Homesick Blues, Written, oddly enough by Bob Dylan and sung by the Red Hot Chili Peppers (yes, lots of their songs were punk, back in the 80's when they were young) Bob Dylan's political lyrics, combined with the Chili Pepper's rythym and energy makes a great Punk song.
4th Place goes to Mc5 - for writing a staple Punk song - Kick out The Jams has been covered by... Everyone really, I wont list the bands.
In 3rd is another joke song. My Way, Frank Sinatra's serious autobiography has the piss taken out of it by the sacrilegious Sex Pistols - and congratulations to them.
2nd - the Silver Medal goes to Rage Against the Machine, for covering another Bob Dylan song, 'Maggie's Farm' Once again, Bob Dylan's sogn writing ability is out to good use by a band with rythym and energy, to create the ultiamte punk song
'Anarchy in the USA' by U2 recieves first place, when it was covered by The Clash. It is a great song, meaningful, and yet also good enough to lsiten to without understnading the words - as it's written in French. Bono (from U2) provides the political opinions, and The Clash reinforce them and add a punk energy, to allow it to be moshed to.
That's all from me for now
Peace

There can be Punk songs that aren't anti-establishment, but it certainly helps.
I shall try to get a listen to The Special's version - the more the merrier. Yeah, I should have mentioned that - Margaret Thatcher is often refered to as Mother Maggie
