The Clash

May 8th 2006 06:06
Yes, the band with a guitarist by the name of Strummer, The Clash were vital in the spread of Punk music, and they were certainly one of the most diverse. They are highly influenced by hip-hop, reggae, jazz, as well as early rock n roll.

Throughout their ten-year history, the clash released 6 albums, and they all achieved a fair degree of success in the British charts. Due to their content, which dealt with issues of British politics foremost (such as English Civil War, London Calling and This is Radio Clash), their albums were mostly unsuccessful in other countries until recently.

This was the cover art for the London Calling album, note its simplicity in design, which embodied the punk DIY ethic

As with most Rock bands, The Clash broke up, essentially because of a band member's heroin addiction. Drummer, Topper Headon left the band for this reason, which essentially led to their breakup. In the words of Joe Strummer, "You're only as good as your drummer"

Their unique fashion sense was partly responsible for their success, and now their clothes are emulated by thousands

Yeah I've been sliiiiiiightly into the Clash of late. What surprised is that their most famous and actually most corny songs have been the ones that have drawn me into it. "I Fought the Law" has an excellent intro and while the rest of the song isn't thaat great, its still an example of the Clash's musicianship.

I Fought the Law is a great song, not actually written by The Clash, but 'Sonny Curtis of The Crickets' (whoever they are)

Well they did an excellent job of it anyway. Rock the Casbah is pretty good.

Awesome music here

That they did. The Dead Kennedy's took an interesting spin to it, changing many lines, including making it 'I fought the law and I won".
I hear you there man

Yeah I have to say I'm more into the Clash's slightly less trad punk stuff, although people have a tendency to label experimental stuff as 'sold out' just because it's different to what they're used to. Sandinista is an awesome album.

I never liked Rock the Kasbah... it reminds me too much of 80s police movies, if that makes any sense..

I haven't heard all of Sandinista, but all of its singles are great. Although, that said, I can perfectly understand fans of the other albums not liking it.

Haha, I'm sure that link makes sense to you, Cibby (I can call you Cibby, right??) but I'm a bit lost as to how it works
