Straight Edge
May 18th 2006 01:12
Straight Edge (sXe) is a sub culture of Punk, and for all its differences to standard Punk ideology, it also contains a large degree of similarity. As with yesterday's post, I don't know how I feel about my topic.
Straight Edgers believe in total abstinance from drugs (alcohol, tobacco or anything harder then those) some also refuse caffeine. Many also refuse to engage in what they refer as 'promiscuous sexual activity'. Now, you're probably thinking 'This doesn't sound like Punk at all'. You have a point, but...
many Straight Edgers promote vegetarianism or veganism, anarchy, socialism, environmentalism and pacifism in much the same way as Anarcho-Punks - the plot thickens.
Minor Threat, whilst not actually sXe, is very much the influence that created the culture, through songs such as (you guessed it 'Straight Edge'
I don't know what you all think about sXe (note, the X comes from the fact that bouncers used to draw an X on underage kid's hands so they wouldn't be able to buy drinks) but it seems to me that they are commited to living as they think is moral
Whilst they do spread their messege through their music, they do so in an acceptable way; they try to convince people to follow their beliefs, but do not try to force anyone, which is the basis of any good culture.
Peace

I decided to become straight Edge because of my nephew Kade. I love him SOOOO much and would be nothing without him!!! He is the whole reason I turned my life around. if he weren't here I'd probably still be doing drugs, drinking and smoking!!!!!
It has been fun and I've been to MANY 'hardcore' shows and I've been having a blast with out drinking, or getting high!!!!
