The Sex Pistols
England’s bad boys, the Sex Pistols (Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious, Steve Jones and Paul Cook) achieved their fame more through their lewd behaviour the their musical talents.
They were signed onto many different labels, and subsequently kicked off after being to raucous for the label executives. This earned them large amounts of money, as each record company had to pay to get the contract cancelled. ‘The Great Rock and Roll Swindle’ is the manager, Malcolm McLaren’s description of this, portraying himself as controlling the Sex Pistols for his own gain.
The Sex Pistols were forced underground after they played a gig on a riverboat during the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, Apparently singing ‘God save the Queen… She aint no human being’ was offensive, and many Sex Pistols fans and even one member were attacked by Royalists and ‘Teddy Boys’ (an intimidating youth group, with a name like that)
The Pistols first and only album, Never Mind the Bollocks was almost banned because of the use of the word Bollocks on the cover, however, the band broke up soon afterwards due to a particularly unpopular tour, where they faced violence at every gig.
The Sex Pistols were a particularly great Punk band, because they were one of the first bands to not be afraid to criticise the British methods of control, espeically through their song's 'Anarchy in the UK' (quoted in the movie V for Vendetta) and 'God Save the Queen'. Even though this made them hated at the time, now they are one of the most popular bands ever.
