Sandi Thom

November 30th 2006 02:38
Yesterday I mentioned Live Aid, and a singer who very much wishes to be back in that era, and during the years when Woodstock wasn't commercialised is Sandi Thom. Her album, Smile, it Confuses People is full of her desire to have lived back during the Hippie or Punk days.

I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
In '77 and '69, revolution was in the air
I was born too late to a world that doesn't care.

She makes an interesting point, the Hippies and Punks rebelled against authority in totally different ways, and yet, as she points out, does it really matter which of these you support?? the real enemy is the authoritarian societies.

I dunno, maybe you think it does.

Here's the track listing
and you can go here to listen to samples of the album.

Give it a chance, When I first heard of it I assumed it would be crap, but the lyrics are good, and the music, whilst certainly not Punk, has an interesting combination of the beauty of hippie music and the rythym of Soul music.

Peace

FINALLY someone who actually looks at the point of the song, rather than just bagging her out because she's the only mainstream artist with something to say. Don't get me wrong, I really don't like her album, but the fact that people don't think about what they're saying just highlights the stupidity of todays society.

And it's also good to see someone who is willing to defend an artist he doesn't like against stupid criticisms.

Out of curiousity, what don't you like about her album? or is it simply that there isn't anything to like?

"I Wish I was Punk rocker" is pretty original because there's no melodic instruments and its put to a pop song, its daring but it works. But the rest of the album is just you run-of-the-mill acoustic pop.
