Rolling Stones

Hey everyone, im back from my exam week a little worse for wear, and I've been spending some time broadening my musical tastes, mostly as an alternative to revising.
Today's post shall be on the mighty Rolling Stones
Tomorrows on Sly and the Family Stone - one of the earliest funk bands
Alas, for Wednesday I couldn't find a band with the word stone in, but Indie rockers the Arcade Fire shall do instead
If I've had enough of a listen to their music, I'll tell you about another Funk band, Earth, Wind and Fire.
but I'm getting ahead of myself.
Instead of giving you a 1 line review of each of the Stones's 40 something albums (most of which I know nothing about) I'll go into detail about a few awesome songs.
The band originally consisted of
Mick Jagger - lead vocals
Keith Richards - guitar, vocals
Brian Jones - guitar, vocals
Bill Wyman - bass
Carlo Little - drums
But the first two are the only original members still in the band.
Now, I don't know about all you Rolling Stones fans out there (leave a comment, I'd like to know), but my favourite has to be 'Sympathy for the Devil' (lyrics below), it's got some really good lyrics, fairly simple (ignoring the guitar work) use of instruments is employed with great result, and the singing in it is, unsurprisingly, brilliant. I have no idea if he actually has sympathy for the devil or not, the song seems more about the chaos of last century then religion
Please allow me to introduce myself
Im a man of wealth and taste
Ive been around for a long, long year
Stole many a mans soul and faith
And I was round when jesus christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
I stuck around st. petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain
I rode a tank
Held a generals rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
I shouted out,
Who killed the kennedys?
When after all
It was you and me
Let me please introduce myself
Im a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached bombay
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But whats confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me lucifer
cause Im in need of some restraint
So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or Ill lay your soul to waste, um yeah
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, um yeah
But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, um mean it, get down
Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah!
Tell me baby, whats my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, whats my name
I tell you one time, youre to blame
Ooo, who
Ooo, who
Ooo, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Oh, yeah
Whats me name
Tell me, baby, whats my name
Tell me, sweetie, whats my name
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Oh, yeah
'Satisfaction' and 'Start me Up' are another couple of my favourites, they're much simpler in terms of lyrics, but they sound good so who cares. What else can I add. They've sold 240 million albums worldwide, pretty impressive.
If you're wanting to buy an album by the Rolling Stones, I can only suggest that your first should be 40 Licks. I'm usually against compilations, as most bands tend to release their more mainstream and commercially music on them. But 40 Licks has a pretty good tracklist in my opinion

Alongside Che Guevara's visage, and the Ramones, the Rolling Stones mouth decorates millions of badges and buttons worldwide
