Punks and Hippies
September 14th 2006 11:39
This may end as a 2 part post, due to my rambling nature. What I'm trying to work out is, why do so many Punks hate hippies?
I mean, both cultures are (with few exceptions) opposed to war and conservatism, facism, basically anything right wing. And believe me, that leaves the two groups with plenty of enemies, they don't need to be creating more.
There are, I'll admit, differences, hippies were a lot more positive in their outlook, the movie 'the Sid and Nancy Story' mentions the difference of sex, hippies apparently had more of it. Punks were alot more aggressive
Anyhoom I'll find out some examples of this anti-hippie attitude
"never trust a hippie"
Is part of the Sex Pistols song, 'Who Killed Bambi', the name of a NOFX EP. Although, it must be said that apparently, the Sex Pistols were refering to a single hippie, Richard Branson (I don't know if he actually is a hippie or not, but the Sex Pistols apparently thought he was.)
There's also the old joke
A punk and a hippie are walking down the street and the hippie says" so what is punk anyway?"
The punk kicks over a garbage can and says "THATS PUNK!!"
The hippie walks over and kicks another trash can over and says "now am i a punk" and the punk says "no now you're a poser!"
Some guy claims that "Many of these bands also intended to shock mainstream society, rejecting the "peace and love" image of the prior musical rebellion of the 1960s which had degenerated, punks thought, into mellow disco culture."
And this is supported by the words of the Punk band, Crass, who claim that "punk became a fashion, just like hippie used to be, and it ain't got a thing to do with the likes of you and me"
This makes a bit of sense to me, because Punks also hate what has happened to their own genre, so it's fair enough for them to also hate what happened to the hippies. So my guess would be that it was that, combined with the minor differences between the peaceful hippies and the loud and aggressive punks.
Well, I'd love to hear from someone who was actually around during the late 60's early 70's
Peace to all (including hippies - we love ya really)

Punks realized that the only way we could achieve a better world is by using force and demanding change. I think essentially Punks hate hippys because they sat around in fields saying 'peace man' getting high and talking about a better world but failed to do anything about it.

I am neither, being a part of the goth subculture, but I think there definitley needs to be some respect between the two. I think somewhere in the middle of the over agressive and the too calm/unprogressive there's a middleground that's useful.

Around about 1970 you had these posh middle class hippie kids who turned their noses up at everyone.
they were rich. smug. condescending. clique-ish white middle class rich kids - they were hippies. they would talk about how they hated private property but take everything from you and share nothing.. if you looked at something they owned they would go at you as if they were going to stab you. the bands regarded themselves as aristocrats and their followers thought they were a 'superior' elite and laughed at the 'working class' peasants'. they were hypocrites.
they came from rich families and their background - even though they dressed like hippies - betrayed them. the kaftan wearing girls were 'little daddies girls' - they only liked people of their own class and set..
they talked about 'peace' but told young kids kids to fuck off and sneered and laughed at them because they werent 'their set'. read dj john peels bio for further details.
the children who were told to f^^^ off became punks which is why they looked exactly the opposite and hated the hippies. i was there and saw all that shit happen..
