Privacy in Schools
August 24th 2006 02:33
Yeah, today's post is just one long bitch session at the Australian Public School System, so strap yourselves in.
Online privacy in schools is rapidly dissapearing, as school after school introduces a new policy towards internet access. In a few weeks, my school is introducing a login name and password for their students, hotmail and other such programs will be banned and the school email client will be the only usable one.
This gives school teachers and the department of education unlimited control over the content that school children can view, and the ability to read anything we have written, and any website we've been to.
I don't know if this pisses you guys off as much as it does me
Teachers can read students emails
Teachers can censor infomation recieved by students
Teachers can access every site a student has been to.
As much as I hate making the situation sound really dramatic, every country (that I am aware of) which has introduced measures such as this has become either a dictatorship or other authoritarian government. Stalin and Hitler introduced measures like this in the 30's, but with newspapers and snail mail instead of internet sites and email.
Is it really safe to use such an email address? even if it is only used for schoolwork. In engineering I have to research how to fly a plane, and in Modern History I have to study the Arab Israeli conflict and global terrorism. What do you think would happen if someone from the department of education noticed that I'd been to a pro-Islamic website for information, and had recently learnt how to fly a plane?? In this day of racism, intolerance and paranoia I'd be arrested under the shonky new terrorism laws. Fun, hey??
Well, that's my rant done
If you want to complain about it, Here is the Department website, and their phone number is 02 9561 8000
Peace

I wouldn't worry to much about it if i were you, you'l be gone soon and then you get a taste of the freedom of university email!
This from the University of Sydney's Information Technology Policy:
"It is expected that you will utilise these resources legally, ethically and productively."
"Key points
The University may monitor your use of its information technology services to ensure they are used in a manner consistent with the conditions of use..."
