Placebo

Another modern band that is made great by its lead singer (Brian Molko), Placebo's songs vary between songs about Molko's confused life, strange, even kinky love songs and political protests.
Anyone who's heard "The Bitter End" and nothing else of Placebo, don't judge them on that one song; as usual it's inaccurate to judge a band by their most popular song. "Slave to the Wage" or "Black Eyed" are better examples of their music and lyrics.
Just in case you can't tell from the picture: Brian Molko is male; just a cross dressing, androgynous one.
I'm not sure exactly what genre I would class Placebo as; they aren't quite political enough to fit the old definition of Punk, and too many of their songs are slow and melodic. The lyrics are too poetic to be modern Punk or Punk Rock.
Many people describe them as emo because Molko does sing about depressing subjects and their fashions are similar, but i think there are critical differences. Molko knows that other people have worse lives then himself, and tries to help them with his lyrics - All the emo bands I know write for their own gain.
One of the best live videos I've ever seen involves Placebo and The Cure singing a Cure song (If only Tonight I could Sleep) If you can get a hold of the bonus DVD from the new "Meds" album, its worth a look
you should go have a look at The PlaceboWorld homepage - find out more about an incredibly inyeresting band
Peace

The more i listen to Med's, the more i realise how much placebo have moved away from their earlier stuff... This album seems so much more melodic (in a good way) than earlier releases...
Keep up the good work scott, and chance of a review of 'The (international) Noise Conspirace'... oh that brings back memories of my youth...

I hadn't heard of the international noise conspiracy - they sound pretty good according to wikipedia. Brings back memories of your youth?? you're only 19 (give or take a year)
