Penis Envy

The name of an album by Crass, and one of Freud's weirder theories, Penis Envy surely deserves its own post.
Penis envy (according to Freud) occurs in girls at a very young age, when they develop sexual feelings towards their mother, but cannot act on them due to not having a Penis, however - she soon starts to blame her mother for this 'lack' and the sexual feelings shift towards her father, and then onto males in general. Does this describe you??? Be honest
Regardless, I'm probably getting a bit off topic, Freud deffiantely seems an odd choice as inspiration for Crass, as does the phrase Penis Envy. Freud's theory claims that women have Penis Envy because they desire the power that it represents, and yet Crass have been widely known for their feminist views. It seems, however that the album was purposefully given an ironic title, to draw attention to the feminist views expressed on the album.
Another interperatation of Freud's 'penis envy' theory is evident in The Yippie movement. Yippies are a weird mix of Hippie, Punk, and Post Modern artists. It is, however, more of a political and cultural movement then a musical.
The link says that "Sexual insecurity results in a supermasculinity trip called imperialism. Amerikan foreign policy especially in Vietnam, makes no sense except sexually. Amerika has a frustrated penis, trying to drive itself into Vietnam's tiny slit to prove it is The Man.", Taking Freud's theories out of context, sure. But I think Crass and the Yippie's are more right then Freud ever was, and many of the points made by the two groups have greatly influenced the Punk scene.
