Welcome to the world of deceptive post titles, this has nothing to do with Pandora's Box (an Ancient Greek Myth told of a box that, when open, pretty much loosed all kinds of mayhem and destruction). It is more to do with
Pandora.com
This is a free online interactive radio station. Essentially, how it works is, you enter the name of one or more artists or songs, and the site will search through its database for songs with similar properties, such as 'extensive vamping' 'male vocalist' 'major key tonality' 'punk (or any other genre) influences'
It's a pretty good way to find music that you like, and yet it also helps to diversify you musical repotoire.
For example, a station based on 'Anarchy in the UK' by the Sex Pistols, quickly turned up 'Cherub Rock' by the Smashing Pumpkins, which resulted in a Pearl Jam song, followed by a killer song by 'Swervedriver' (Don't ask me who they are - that was the first time I heard of them) being played from the 'cherub rock' radio station.
When you have entered as many songs or albums to your station, you can ensure the music is fits your taste even more closely by clicking one of two buttons, I like it or I don't like it. I get the feeling that every time you click on of these two, it affects not only what songs it plays to you, but also to a small degree what songs it plays for everyone.
This is a fairly good idea, but assuming I'm right it could make it very hard to find unpopular bands after the system has been running for a few years. And as we all know, the unpopular bands are usually the best.
Well, time to wrap it up with something nice and conclusive. Go to the site at least once, when you feel like listening to something new, but not anything that they play on the radio. (To all the Aussies - how much is JJJ sliding as of late?? they've been playing mostly hip-hop. Even if it's much better then the mainstream hip-hop that the other channels play, I would prefer a balance between that, Rock, Punk and Metal.
Oh, and check out Leon's movie review blog, it's also a cool site.
Peace
