No Better then They?
January 1st 2007 00:57
First of all, happy New Year everyone (except maybe the Chinese - I have no idea when Chinese New Year is this year)
I hope you all enjoyed your night, and are enjoying your hangovers. Anyone with a good New Years resolution - leave it as a comment with guess as to how long it will last.
Anyhoo, with reference to the post title, I assume you have all heard about Sudam Hussein's death. I don't want anyone to think I support him, I would've turned him over to the War Crimes tribunal in the Hague in a second. But honestly - are we (the West that is) no better then him?
He killed thousands for their political opposition to him, as scapegoats on which to distract attention from his shonky rule.
Well, that's exactly why Bush invaded Iraq, and he has manged to kill hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civillians since the first day of the invasion.
One also has to wonder if the death penalty is ever justifyable.
It certainly isn't a fitting punishment for murder, because if the State endorses murder for certain reasons, it gives people the impression that murder is justifyable in certain circumstances - it turns out that the death penalty is a terrible deterant.
Ahh well, make up your own mind
Peace
