Nina Hagen
May 25th 2006 23:44
I just realised, I've said pretty much nothing about female Punks (1) so far. For whatever reason, there really aren't that many. Sure, a few bands have a chick as backup singer, but there are few female lead singers, and even fewer all female Punk (2) bands.
That out of the way, Nina Hagen (not Nena - Nena sings 99 Red Balloons) is a German Punk (3) singer (from East Berlin), born in the 50's and active from the 70's until present.
Her first band was Automobil, which was good, but not exceptional, and soon changed into 'The Nina Hagen Band', where Nina First became known outside of Germany. However, the band split up after 2 albums, after which she recorded a number of successful solo albums.

Some of her better songs include a cover of 'My Way', by Frank Sinatra - Nothing like the original of course. 'African Reggae' and 'Don't Kill the Animals' are fine examples of Nina's odd interperatations of Punk (4) - screaming political lyrics, with a funky intrument playing in the background, hitns of electronica and occasional opera singing by Nina.
Her song, Antiworld just shows how spectacularly insane she is - great song though.
If you like more traditional rock, you might be best to listen to her song with Supla, such as Garota De Berlin.
It's a shame most of her songs are written in German.. Actually, its a shame that I don't speak German. Between her, Rammstein and Nietzsche, I've almost decided to learn some of it.
(Ok, so I said I would use the word Punk (5) 10 times this post, but I didn't do bad.)
Peace
