Let Them Eat War
September 16th 2006 01:50
... Is the name of a song by 'Bad Religion', about which the Lead Singer said "[it is] based on the thought that the current administration puts so much money into this war while our own poor are struggling just to eat."
It makes sense, the US spends $441.6 Billion on 'Defence' as opposed to $367.0 billion on unemployment and welfare.
This song sums up one of the major problems of war (besides the whole killing people thing), the class inequity in the military. The officer training is a long and expensive process, and as such is only really available to the upper class, whilst the poor, because they desperately need money, are recruited as cannon fodder.
Honestly, you look at any country with a bad welfare system (I'm looking at you America) It's deliberately done, not only to save money, but also to force the poor into military service.
The rich get richer, the poor get the picture
In Australia, university charges have risen from $0 under the moderately leftwing government headed by Gough Whitlam, to approx $20 000 per year under the conservative Howard government. Co-incidentally, the army is now offering scholarships, paying for a person's Uni on the condition that they then join the army for at least as many years as they spent at Uni.
Now, this must appear mighty appealing to many people who don't have 60 000 - 120 000 dollars to splash out over the years, but to any who're considering it, please, don't become a soldier, don't kill people for your uni education.
Peace
