Iggy Pop

May 21st 2006 06:50
There's no way to start this without using the words 'crazy, crazy man' so there it is. He was born in 1947 and was active as a singer from the late 60's. Earlier this year, at age 59, Iggy and the Stooges (newly reunited since their split in the 70's) played at the Big Day Out - an Australian music festival. He's doing pretty well for his years, especially considering his heroin addiction in the 70's and 80's.

His music combines the rough and loud sound of early Punk music, with influences of Blues and Glam Rock, which was introduced to him via his friendship with David Bowie.

While the songs recorded with the Stooges in the 70's achieved very little in the mainstream music scene at the time of release, they have more recently become fairly popular, due to bands such as The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, David Bowie and Siouxsie and the Banshees (I should do a post on them someday) claiming Iggy and the Stooges as influences, and covering some of their better songs; 'Raw Power', 'Search and Destroy' and 'The Passenger'

I've heard of ruggedly handsome, but he takes it a bit too far

His albums in the 80's involved alot of him being helped out by David Bowie, who was a loyal friend and saw Iggy's potential, however, his fans from the 'Stooges' era felt that his solo music lacked a certain something.

By the 90's he had achieved fame in his own right, and he reworked some of his earlier songs to move them away from the Glam Rock feel they had attained due to Bowie's influence and back to the Punk Rock energy that had made the Stooges such an underground success.

Throughout his long career, Iggy has maintained his Punk attitude and musical style, whilst also diversifying his music. He is one of the most intelligent Punk musicians ever (just listen to an interview if you don't believe me) and is also one of the wildest and most long lived.
