Guantánamo Bay Detention is Illegal
July 3rd 2006 23:11
Well, I'm sure you all already knew that, but the Supreme Court finally pointed out to Bush that it violates, US and international law, as well as the Geneva Convention on Human Rights. The articles the US allegedly broke in Guantánamo Bay include:
(Article 13): "Prisoners of war must at all times be humanely treated."
(Article 13): "...Prisoners of war must at all times be protected, particularly against acts of violence or intimidation and against insults and public curiosity."
(Article 17): "No physical or mental torture, nor any other form of coercion, may be inflicted on prisoners of war to secure from them information of any kind whatever. Prisoners of war who refuse to answer may not be threatened, insulted or exposed to unpleasant or disadvantageous treatment of any kind."
(Article 25): "Prisoners of war shall be quartered under conditions as favorable as those for the forces of the Detaining Power who are billeted in the same area."
Many prisoners have also not been allowed to meet with attorneys and David Hicks (an Aussie) has been held for years without charge. In Australian civil courts, a man can be held fo 24 hours without charge, in America its either 24 hours or 1 week - I can't remember.
Hoenstly, what was the point of invading Iraq? Afghanistan was a simple case of violent and excessive revenge, but why Iraq? Accordign to Bush, it was to prevent further terrorist attacks on America. Lets think about that for a second.
The Taliban attacked America
America attacked the Taliban
America attacked Iraq
...
Look at Switzerland, haven't invaded anyone - haven't been invaded. As a result, they get to keep their beautiful mountains and snowfields.
Heard some awesome Punk song on JJJ - didn't catch the name, but it was a chick singing "I fought the war and the war won" anyone know who it is??
Peace
