Emo Culture

May 31st 2006 03:45
As much as I dislike the Emo movement, I'll try to not be too biased against them.

To start with, I'll explain why I don't like the Emo culture (lots of generalisations ahead); It's glorification of suicide, in which it is turned into a fashion statement, is terrible. I'm not one of those who believes that suicide is sinful or immoral, its just that, like many things, Emo has taken their acceptence of suicide too far.

Stereotypical Emo
Alas, unlike most stereotypical cartoons, alot of emo's dress identical to this, which isn't a good thing for any counter-culture

Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License

Another example of going too far, is apparent in Emo's rejection of normal society's stigma against people (especially guys) showing emotions. Now, that sounds like a pretty damn good idea the Emo movement has, but they have made it so that in their counter-culture, people must show emotion, and that that emotion must be depression or anger.

Moving on, Emo is responsible for some pretty good things too - they promote vegetarianism for moral reasons (which is one of their links to Straight Edge) They are also for the most part pacifistic and accepting, which can't be said for some of those who dislike Emo's.

Not many know this, but Emo has been around since the 80's in Washington, when it branched off from the Hardcore sceen due to dissilusionment with the violence that was occuring at the time. It remained a Washington only genre until the 90's, when a new generation of Emo bands started off, influenced also by Indie. It was in this decade that Emo became considerably calmer.

By 2000, most of these bands had lost their underground following, as they became incresingly mainstream. However, as these bands were still seen as Emo, they deffinition of the genre became much more mainstream, much softer and, well, basically turned into what it was today.

Now, I need some variety of Conclusion... Hmm, I can't think of one, check tomorrow's post, which will be about Emo Music, for a conclusion

First off, I think I get that you get the emo is short for emotinal. To me, that is all that it is. Not clothing, bands, just emotions. To me, a spefic band isn't emo, it's the lyrics that are. Not stereotypical Hawthorne Heights. I mean bands that know they are making emotional music. H.H just got labeled that. But I undertsand why some people labeled it emo.

On fashion. To me, fashion is just fashion. I don't call my fashion anything. I like to wear what I like to wear. You may call it emo, but I will say back, "I'm glad you accept me for who I am and not the label I was just given."

Someone can wear that and you can call them emo but I won't. I can wear that and I'm not emo. yeah i'm emotional, but not "emo."

i can wear any clothing and I know it doesn't make me punk or whatever.

There are at least two reasons I can come up with why people label fashion. Let['s say there are 20 people that look they same and they are all emotinal, let's call them all emo kids. and then anyone who dresses liek that will be called emo

next ex: if you label a band emo based on there music, then people do stupid association with music and clothes and there you go.

yo anonymous - I think you need to work on your communication skills before trying to formulate relevant opinions, because I pretty much didn't get any of that.

Emo sucks - why the hell would you create a sub-culture around a bunch of sad cunts???

Erika, if you are just going to spout your opinion without caring about other's views, piss off.

I agree anonymous, with the second bit. I don't particularly find emos hot, but yeah, I'm sure there are lots of emos who don't spend their whole lives depressed and cutting themselves, cos there are other things that the emo movement is about

Hey Jess
Hehe, black is the most overused colour, most Punks and Punk derived groups wear it, as do lots of rockers and even some rappers, etc.

i think if your emo you are pathetic.....if you have a depressing life, wearing black and eye liner and all that crap is asking to be called emo...they are seeking attention and parading about claiming the emo tag then when sites like this come up they think its all unfair to be called emo...stupid mate...get a life....if your really depressed get some bloody help...don't parade around seeking attention for your problems....

Um. First of all, I value all of you opinions, but I don't think Emo in general 'sucks'

Alot of people who are labeled as 'emo's' aren't even emo to begin with. There is a HUGE misconception going on. And even gothic people are now being reffered to as 'emo' simply because there are alot of un-educated morons who can't even tell the difference.

And anyway, I don't think all 'emo' people are bad. Some of them take it too far and try to make every little thing in everyday like into a scence, but other do it simply because they like the music and develop that kind of taste in clothing. Alot of them are actually really happy people and are quite outgoing and easy to get along with.

That's just my opinion. I try to accept everyone simply for who they are. As long as it's genuine, I don't see why it matters.

How are we supposed to tell the difference when they look the same? you can only tell the difference if your emo and you havnt seen them in your own little clan. Picture it this way, Emo's arnt more hard done by then anyone else, but they think they are. Lifes a bitch but they can't get over how they think everything is against them...they want people to be disgusted at how bad they look so they can still think they are hard done by and life is unfair. There are plenty more people around the world doing it harder then an emo but they dont dress themselves in black and parade their depressiveness around.
There is no point arguing anymore coz you all just get more enjoyment out of slitting your wrists

1. People who are emo are not depressed all the time, and they certainly do not condone suicide and self mutilation, only a hand full of radicals, just like any sub-culture.

2. Cultures/sub-cultures are stupid anyway, people seem to like to group together for some reason, its in our nature, and "emo" is just another group. people "join" it because they might agree with some, most or all of what the group is generally about. Personally I've never fitted into any group because I've never agreed with everything, in theory no one should fit into any group because we're all individual ie: indivisable.

3. I believe the main reason why most people get into the emo scene (not all) is because of the style, the fashion, the hair, etc.

4. I totally agree that emos in general are more open, accepting, have stronger moral fibre in general, etc. and you know what, they couldnt give a shit what people say about them! non-emos appear to be more obsessed with the emo scene more than emos themselves.

5. You are wrong if you say emos must feel emotion and that emotion must be depression, thats just stupid, somone told you that or you heard it somwhere and you can't found it on any real evidence because there is none. people don't become emo because they must be sad, they become emo because its okay to be sad, in normal society it isnt okay to be sad, aparently.

6. most other cultures/sub-cultures are really downright stupid, literally following the masses. Emo is still very small when compared to other sub-cultures like metro, every club you go to are full of people wearing the same shirts all the girls have blonde hair and they all drink and smoke.

7. If I had to conform to a sub-culture it would be emo. But learn this lesson, be yourself! Gain influences from everyone and everything around you of course, do what you want to do and be who you want to be! Just cause everyone drinks ethanol dosent mean you should too, etc, etc.

Your text goes hereYour text goes here Just a post from someone in Australia. Emo as a fashion and/or cultural movement has only really gained momentum here in the last two years, especially with younger teen girls following the fashions of groups such as the Veronicas. As such movements become more and more mainstream, I think it is incorrect to call them subcultures, as they have really outgrown such a label. It is interesting that the whole genre (whether by streotype or otherwise) seems to glamourise death and self harm, but in the end, it's just another way that people are trying to express themselves, really the same as other street styles, just with a different soundtrack. In the end, each of the people who have chosen to adopt the look is their own person- they are just following a fashion that is tipped as being defiant and unacceptable- something most young people are drawn to.

1. Don't Lable Them.
2. Don't Judge Them. Meet Them. Know Them.
3. They Are Really Fun People To Be With As Well As Goths. They Are Nice People, Really.
4. Anyway It's Not About The Way You Dress Or What Music You Listen To It's You.
5. They Are Awesome Musicians.

People Who Go: 'Emos Are Gay'. Have You Talked To Them? And Are You Just Hating Them For The Sake Of Hating Them? How Do You Know They Are Obsessed With Dying? Let Me Guess. Someone Told You? A Rumour? Yes, Some May Be But Why Do You Care? And No, They Do Not Cut Their Wrist. It's A Rumour.

Some Of The Things I Wrote May Not Be True Since I'm Not Emo Though Some Of My Emo Friends Are Trying To Convert me. =/ But Please Don't Judge Them. They Are Great People.

HATE EMO??
READ THIS:

Isnt it funny that when you go to the shops with your friends you look down at the girl with black jeans and studs but smile at the girl wearing a a mini with a tshirt that barely cover anything?

Isnt it funny you can change your music taste to impress a guy but when it comes to a girl who likes her own music and her own style, you give her a mouthful?

ISNT IT FUNNY that a guy can get away with being a gangsta but the emo gets a mouthful from everyone

are you laughing?

Isnt it funny a emo can be quiet all through the week but gets more shit from everyone than the girl who sleeps around and sells her virginity?

ISNT IT FUNNY that you dont mind your friends drinking, smoking but the minute someone mentions emo music you can give them a lecture on melodramatic teenage outcasts?

im not laughing.

ITS SO FUNNY that you and your friends can make a girls life hell and not know anything about the silent battle she might be fighting.

ISNT IT FUNNY that you can call emos, punks, goths the retards but still manage to get through your day without an inch of guilt in your heart.

HOW YOU CAN CALL A GIRL A POSER, HOW CAN YOU SAY "YOUR NOT EMO" OR "ATTENTION SEEKER" WITHOUT SPENDING A SECOND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY THERE ARE CUTS ON HER WRISTS AND WHY SHE SPENDS HER LUNCHTIMES CRYING INSTEAD OR LAUGHING WITH HER FRIENDS

KEEP ON LAUGHING

isnt it funny you can say and do all this without any idea of what is going on in this persons life

without knowing her situation with her friends

or her family

or her LIFE

BRAVE ISNT GOING UP ON STAGE AND STRIPPING

BRAVE IS NOT SAYING A SPEECH

OR DUMPING YOUR BOYFRIEND

BRAVE IS

GOING TO SCHOOL ON MUFTI DAY AND NOT FOR A SECOND CARE WHAT THE WHORES AROUND YOU ARE SAYING ABOUT YOUR CLOTHES

ITS LISTENING TO YOUR OWN MUSIC AND BEING PROUD OF IT

ITS GOING THROUGH EVERY DAY WITH THE THINGS PEOPLE SAY TO YOUR FACE AND BEHIND YOUR BACK AND YOU STILL KEEP QUIET

ITS KNOWING WHAT YOUR "FRIENDS" ARE SAYING ABOUT YOU AND STILL CALLING THEM YOUR FRIENDS

BRAVE IS KNOWING THAT TOMOROW ISNT A BRIGHT AND HAPPY FUTURE

ITS ANOTHER DAY OF BITCHING AND DODGING RUMORS

KEEP ON LAUGHING.

Sorry mate, I don't buy much of what you say, Whilst I obviously feel sorry for any Emos that actually have a bad life, I belive them to be very much a minority, swamped by all the Emo's that cut themsleves, not because they have a bad life, but because they want people to be paying them constant attention.

On to the other things you said
I think jeans and studs look better then miniskirts
I don't know any 'gangstas'
So what if people drink, smoking is terrible for the environment and anybody around so that's a different matter. However, being a melodramatic teen prevents us from realising when someone actually does need help.
I don't make anyone's life hell, so I have no guilt in that respect

By the way, I love how you present Emo as an underground movement, and say that listening to Emo is 'liking your own style of music'

sorry, along with Pop and R'nB it's in the top 3 most popular genres

Peace

I think if anyone is cutting themselves thye got problems. If someone wants attention to such an extent that they resort to self harm they probably deserve some. Do you ever think about why they want attention? Ever thought that maybe they are hurting?
My Chemical Romance are a really talented band and clearly you haven't listened to I'm Not Okay case it not just Gerad bitching about how terriblr his life is. Why is music meant to be happy who said that, did the Beatles only right sad songs? Did the Rolling Stones? Did the Clash? Did Smashing Pumpkins, or Radiohead? Music can be sad. Although the Black Parade isn't all down it has some up lifting moments the title track is up lifting "we'll Carry on, though your broken and defeated your memory will carry on"
Well that's my 2 cents on way to much for one quote so have fun and play nicely kids.

My daughter, a high school prep, always thought "emo hair" was hot and recently dumped her jock boyfriend for an emo guy. He wears girls jeans, started his own band, and is almost as thin as her which isn't a prob except that he doesn't seem very masculine. In fact, I'd swear he was gay. Very feminine voice, gestures, wants to be a chef, lots of pictures on his myspace of him with arm around his guy friends, etc. OK none of those things on their own would constitute gayness, and I know he is sexually interested in girls and a really nice guy who is not afraid to be himself, but I wonder...Are emo guys sometimes mistaken for gay? Are they overly affectionate with their guy friends?

There's nothing wrong with emo music.

As for MCR. they're awesome
I went to their cocnert 23rd of January 2007

They've gone waay outta the emo style.
if you want emo, go listen to that weird band
Hawthorne heights. go complain about them.
Not MCR.

You shouldnt. stereotype people for what they look like.

Them preppy sluts. wear make up

So do the people you're paying out.
just because they wear it differently.

Them preppy sluts. wear clothes.
They were it in a brand. I wear it as a band.

them sluts. Listen to music.
it's just different.

you seriously shouldnt judge people.

People who hate people for no reason.
but being themselfs.

SHOULD get the life. and give me a better reason
then to why they hate them. other than being
a suicidal maniac. as you guys would put it.

just because. You listen to Emo/hardcore music
it doesnt make you emo

Its great that so many people have something to say, either in defense, explanation, or curiousity about this topic. We all ultimately live in the same society whether we think alike or not, we shouldn't be going out of our way to discredit or tear apart others based on superficial opinions and ignorance. Maybe when people become a little more excepting and understanding then social concepts, practices and experiences will no longer arouse hate and discrimination. For those of you who feel the need to either defend, answer or support the emo characterization and for those of you who would rather show more primitive human qualities such as misunderstanding and ignorance of diverse lifestyles and personalities, maybe it would be better for your cause if you could clearly express yourself with intelligible words and language. It might convey a more satisfactory point to readers.

so.

its not your life, don't worry about it.
if you dont like it, leave it alone.
if its not bothering you, dont bother it.
common sense?
yes it is.
but thats the problem.
people.
lack.
common.
sense.
and, music..is music. it doesnt take more tallent to rap than it does to scream. or to sing.
it takes tallent to perform any kind of music.
i think "emo" music, or country music have more meaning than any kind of hip hop or rap, but i like both.
again, music, is music.
the stuff i listen to depends upon my mood at the time, and whats going on in my life.
i love what i can relate to.
everybody does.
thats how everyone is.
yeah, i like hawthorne heights, and i like dashboard confessional, and i like secondhand serenade, but i like nelly too, and i like young joc, and yung dro.
and guess what?
i LOVE brittany spears. she's my favorite.

Sounds to me like Emo is just another way to be different - which in turn makes a group of people all trying to be different!!!! - which in the end means you aren't (different that is)

It's nothing new - it's been going on since people controllers - especially the media - realised there's money to be made out of this propaganda.

Why curse and swear because others don't see it your way? Go do something useful in the world with all that energy.

People really need to stop generalizing everyone is entitled to look and act however they please it doesn't make them anyless of a person.
I personally don't know any emos however i have so much respect for them as they do not conform to the expectations of society and because of this they are put down and made fun of because they choose to wear what they want and so what if its black and they listen to their preferred music, Isn't that just what ever other single person does just in a different way.
Black Jeans and Chuck Taylor Shoes and black tops there is nothing wrong with it, in my opinion 'emo fashion' if thats what you want to call it is cool. I have days where i will wear things like that because im in a crappy mood and dont feel like wearing much colour, and there is absolutly nothing wrong with dressing how you feel (black is a great colour).

It's really pathetic that ppl are judged by what they wear. the clothes that you wear does not change who you are it does not make you a bad person or vica verca its clothing and nothing more.

music: MCR is a great band they have awesome music and if you actually listen to the words then you will understand that there music has as much meaning as anyother band/singers music maybe even more. i have a wide range of music likes because music changes depending on your mood/feelings and EMOTIONS. so therefor music does not need to be happy because ppl are never always happy. If anyone can say that they are happy everyday that they wake up then they need to get back to reality because life has ups and downs and ppl deal differently with each day.

lastly not all emos cut themseleves that is just a stupid narrow minded persons false thoughts and rumours. There are many ppl that commit suicide or maliciously harm themselves and they are not all emos they are just normal people who are upset with their life and they way things are going and need attention or just someone to talk to.

So everyone should just grow up and open their eyes to the world outside other than see things from a onesided point of veiw. we are all human and we all have different opinions and thoughts just accept everyone for who they are and not what they conform to or what sub/culture they are part of.

What i know emos for are basically not awsomely happy but they just like the music!! And th ppl into this music just show it!
Just like how you can let out emotions in art, poetry, music writing, playing instruments...except you do it with your clothing and thats awsome!
Why follow the norm?
I guess a lot of emo's dress a bit the same -hair cuts and jeans- WHATEVER
but look at all the slutty girls -short denim skirts, tight singlets.
Emo's are people and should be treated wiv respect.
I feel quite strongly bowt this "matter" lol i sownd like a retard but i dont call myself emo...i wear pants(black) i wear eyeliner(so what) i have dark hair(natural hair colour) i like random blobz of randomness in my dress sense (get over it!!!) Its jus like when people go over seas and buy clothes that are "cooler" and different to those back at home (i live in New Zealand so we get hardly any unique stores and stuff)
I get called emo every where...and like that girl up there said... AnonymousJanuary 3rd 2007 14:28
i go through my day at school being abused. Just walking into class i get screames at and all for wearing our uniform (happens to be black) they're all like "YOUR SO EMO AND DARK!!! GO KILL YOURSELF"
DUH!!! school uniform!!

If you dont like emo's then dont look up emo on google just to laugh at them. Half of the emo's dont give a flying shit to be honest. They be who ever they wanna be and people that yell and pick on them arnt going to change them at all. Emo haters are a waste of space.

EMO is NOT short for emotion
every kind of music has emotion and that makes music what it is. EMO is short for Emotive Hardcore which is the gayness that is disliked by so many of the underground punk and overall music culture today.

Hello there to all you emo haters!
So- the fact of the matter is, many emos look alike! Get over it! So do many gangstas and....other types of hoodlums with their overly large chains and GRILLLLLLLLZ, but you don't go on about them being clones, now DO you?
No.
I myself am classed as an "emo" by many of the people I know. This is not because I look depressed or I walk around with tears in my eyes! Nay! It is because of the way I dress! (i.e. black skinny jeans, band tops, black, studded belts, eyeliner, black, "emo fringe", black, pale skin, black...)
I personally believe that they call me emo because they are ignorant to other people. They do not understand that everybody is different and they cannot accept people who are willing to be so.
This is not their fault! It's the way yhat they have been brought up! Just as I hate Germans, they hate emos, etc, etc.

If this makes no sence to anybody- OH WELL! I shall live .
BAHAHAHA

Yoh people, seriously get over yourselfs.
Emo is a type of MUSIC.
Deal with it, its not a classification of a person, its just a overgrown label from society.
And just because some people decide to wear black and do their hair and makeup a certin way doesnt meen they are "emo" or "goth", again DEAL WITH IT.
Think about this next time you call someone "emo"
Maybe they do cut themselvs,
Maybe they have reasons for it,
Maybe they come from a BROKEN HOME.
Just maybe they are on the verge of suicide,
and your remark drives them too it.
Because anyone who's been called this, dosen't appriciate it (unless they are posers who just want the guys xD)

Seriously people,
Get over yourselves, everyones so fucking into labeling and shit, its not even worth your breath.
Everyone is who they are, so deal.
Many peopel are posers, and It's true.

It just bothers me how Gangsters, Preps and Tramps don't get their throats slit for doing what they do, but we do. Like oh my fucking god, we wear tight pants, and Some wear darker colours, and most of us actually have hair, like OH MY GOD. Such a big deal isnt it?

The point of the matter is, seriously stop cutting these people up, its a type of MUSIC

Got it?

I would just like to say the following.
I don't dress emo, although I do own a pair of skinny jeans they look very nice on me (and a pair of converse) anyways. at my school i am labeled as an emo, i'm thinking that emo is more of a lifestyle or an attitude. personally i don't ever see why it matters if someone is emo or not. and i noticed that someone said that indie and emo weren't the same. dude. they are.
emos wear band shirts. indie kids wear band shirts.
emos wear thick rimmed glasses. so do indie kids.
emos are quiet. so are indies.
emos write poetry. so do indies.
emos wear converse. so do indies.
emos breathe. so do indies.

like i said earlier. it doesn't matter if you're emo, indie, prep, or ...gangsta. i guess it depends on the person right?

honestly.. i think anyone who labels people are complete assholes.
everybody is there own self.
i HATE labellers.
like yeah.. you can walk around and say 'that kids emo' but you only say that because of how they dressed.
i sometimes dress in dark clothes.
but im pretty much the most happiest person on earth.
yeah sure i listen to some "emo" music with all the screming and what not. but i also listen to dance music.. and pommys.
emo isn't a bad thing. its only an emotion.
and if people are willing to make these people alot sadder than they already are, then you guys are the ones that should be labelled.
labelled as the jerks, the assholes, the people that don't give a god damn fuck about other peoples feelings.
its you guys i feel sorry for, for actually having the guts to pay out someone else and how they act and feel.
some people are going through hard times. and im sure that if they could change what happenned then they would.
but its your fault that they feel this way.

Can everyone stop labelling people? Even those of you who send out this crap about 'emos are just people', 'emos are not what they wear' and 'emos are just emotional young people trying to get by in a prejudiced world'. Honestly.
I mean, you can BE emo when you're wearing whorish supre wedgy jeans and a tank top that is almost a belt. And you can be one wearing jeans that you borrowed from your granny. AND you can wear a studded belt, have black, spiky hair and in general favour black and NOT be emo. Bloody hell! Its like saying feminists can't wear skirts and gays have to wear skirts. Taking steriotypes to extremes, my friends. And its labelling like THAT, from saddoes who aren't even interested in understand what motivates the supporters of this movement that have created the negative stigma.

And whoever was paying it out because it glorified suicide, you seriously need to get some help. Do you honestly think these people suicide BECAUSE of the emo connection, or do you think - just MAYBE - there is other stuff going on in their lives? I can't understand how anyone can be so blase about that sort of thing. If the emo movement really stood for that sort of thing, it would have got a lot more political attention than it has. Two school girl kids commt suicide together: not because they are two supporters of the emo movement, no matter what they are wearing. Rather two sick kids who have obviously gone through something YOU obviously remain completely cut off from. Think outside of your own sheltered little life for a moment.

Am I emo if I LOOK like a punk but actually have a fantastic life? Saying all emos look alike is pointless. I mean, I picture all of you who mention the sterotyped fashion and I'm thinking teeny-bopper 8th graders who have identical hair and identical bland-slut outfits, and I think, WHO REALLY CARES WHAT WE ALL LOOK LIKE> MAYBE SOME OF US LIKE THE STYLE! DOESN'T MEAN WE'RE ALL DEPRESSED!

Now I have that off my system, I can go back to my fantastically fantastic life, con emo style clothes and sin repressed feelings of inadequacy and self-loathing that make ya'll addicted to knocking minorities like the emos. Ta.

Your face is so fuckin emo cause it like show emotion woooo emotion face. And yes i am high beyond all reason right now but seriously i dunno i think people who cut need to grow up and handle things like an adult. Wake up people who made emo into a side show your gonna have to learn to accept life for what it is. o and top 3 populare genres in the us are pop rap/r&b and country you dumb bitches

As someone else touched on what is sad is the people who search for emo related key phrases on the web, find a site like this and bitch.

Why waste your time if you have no interest in the topic besides to write comments that barely make sense or just repeat the one above.

I have seen many emo articles with 100s of pointless comments. This is just annoying for viewers who actually want to learn about 'emos'

I guess at the end of the day we are entitled to our own opinions though.

I think most emos r tryhards personally. I mean seriously?? how can something that branched of the punk scene be like u have too be like this?? this is the sort of crap thats ruined punk and why theres no bloody decent bands left!! think about it a genre that was about being yourself has become uniformed with soo many labels. Its sickening!!! too me punk is about being yourself; an individual. not i wear more black then you or yippy i listen too crappy fall out boy and slit my wrist. but then again i'm probablly older then most of you. emo bands are not my thing so i wont bag them out too much. except saying they remind me of bands like the backstreet boys in the 1990's. its a pretty scary thought that. god i wish there where stil some decents bands that didn't mature, dont sound like men with no balls or scream and yell trying too be "hardcore". your not hardcore!! your softcore!!
finally do your own thing not i'll do this because i'll look cool or i wanna do it cause there doing it! be yourself dont copy others.

Well, this is a topic that could go on forever. Personally, i don't believe in Emo. Since the early 00's, that many different variations of differend labels have been harboured into the 'Emo' subculture, it's nearly impossible not to see something Emo in anything. Is a person 'Emo' if they wear black? If they are sad sometimes? Maybe having depression makes you Emo? Bands that write music with Emotial meaning. Are they Emo. I don't consider myself Emo and i have written emotional music and i have been sad before. I just think some people have chemical imbalances in their brain that cause them to feel a need to fit in with some group and feel 'respected'. This fabled 'Emo' group is a perfect target as any unhappy person can be one and all they have to do to feel respected is enjoy hurting themselves. It's fucked, just like Goth.

So anyway, it doesn't exist. Too many good things have been labeled emo and it just pisses me off. My chemical romance are considered to be an emo band by a lot of people and i like them. Does that make me Emo? The band them selves have even said that 'they are a rock band' and that 'we think emo is a pile of steaming shit'. That's an example of a false label on something that doesn't even believe in it.

EMO IS A LIE!

i am not classified as an emo although i dress in black use eyeliner and skinny jeans (i dont make it that obvious though). my boyfriend HATES emos....or lets say he hated them.... well i told him how i felt and he kinda related it to emos so he has stopped labeling people because sometimes its not that obvious but, how do you know if ur best friend is not emo in their inside?? you dont need to take on account how they dress or what music they listen to, its their personality, and ok if they're going around parading their depression or miserable lives.....does it hurt you??? I DONT THINK SO......
u should leave people do whatever the hell they want...theyre not harming anyone so give this people a fucking break!!!

theyre not making ur lives miserable....as ur making them...learn from them....keep this comments to you....have they told you anything??? theyre quiet as hell so why is it so upseting to you??
jelousy.....THEY HAVE A FUCKING PERSONALITY THEYRE NOT AFRAID TO SHOW LEARN SOMETHING INSTEAD OF CRITICIZING SOMETHING U DONT UNDERSTAND !!

emos/ scene
emo is someone who can be emotional they dont label themselves as such though...those who do are posers. the fashion is called scene which is what posers are...emo is a label given to the misunderstood, the ones who didn't follow the norm. and no they are not gay they just tend to be more open to ideas and try not to judge others for their differences...Nuff said..p.s. they're just a bunch of unique people who've had hardships and have been labeled together..
-down with labels- unless you preppy...u stay preppy bitch lmao

Emo people are usually not depressed. They like music & are accepting people. I always see the emo kids at my school looking at the popular kids and laughing at them. They seem so content with the fact that they're different from everyone else. If anyone has a problem with emos, take it up with them. Chances are, they don't care what you think.

Lol wtf emo's are just confused sad people that have a differant style than some. I am NOT one of them but good god people. Let them breathe. They are pretty poserish but "Emo's" are just people. Most of them just like the music and style. And If they go to the retarded extremes let them. Grunge (Nirvana <33333) is NOT an "Emo" genre. If they call themselves emo. They are sadly mistaken the term. They are just attention seekers but actually, most of them get plenty of it. And some people (as the girl mentioned way above) Are just somewhat sad and lost and don't really know what to call herself. Shes just confused. They are all. I don't think its all about cutting and stuff. If you cut, your a cutter. Not an "emo". So people just misuse the term, Constantly. I don't hate "emos", I feel bad for them. Until they wan't you to. Then its annoying. I think the "emo style" is quite gay and that guys should NOT wear makeup (Ronnie Radke is an exception) I can't STAND those "emos" I like what I like. Leave me the fuck ALONE if you wanna tell me shit about it. Most emo's are posers and thats that.

btw, emos arnt suicidal or self harming at all- thats depressed. if people claim they are emo and they sellf harm and wear black and act all quite and depressed- thats a wannabe.
emos a culture, more emotional and thoughtful. emos arnt quite most of the time btw, im loud as hell just a lot more respective and i take people for who they are, i like art and music too im not a sad quite little weirdo either- i have loads of friends and people respect my individualality
im a true emo to heart and i can tell you that you shouldnt disrespect the culture because emos are actually really nice people, you lot have just come across wannabes or are just very stereotypical.
the people who have commented above you lot are really a bunch of twats and you shouldnt be so horrible when your probably chavvs, but i still wouldnt be mean to you.
peace out XD
