Definition of Punk
April 19th 2006 23:16
There's a lot of definitions of what is punk, and I'm not saying mine is the one correct one, just use it as a starting point.
Most noticable of all, the majority of punk songs are short, fast, loud and full of energy. There are noticable exceptions, Rage Against the Machine sing some fair length songs, Crass's songs vary in length and tempo. But you should be able to mosh to most punk songs
More importantly, punk must be political - not every single song, but a fair amount. This, i think is the main difference between punk rock and punk. Avril Lavigne and Blink 182 sing amount love, sex and whathaveyou, whilst the clash tried to change the political structure of England
"forget about music, and concentrate on building generation gaps" is a quote from the Sex Pistol's movie, 'The Great Rock and Roll Swindle' - the music of punk is unimportant when compared to the messege behind the band, whatever that may be
hope this helps
