Crass - The band that everyone loves to hate
May 15th 2006 07:58
Sometimes it seems like I'm the only one who actually likes Crass, alot of people hate them for their leftwing views and their means of expressing them, whilst many punks dislike them because they feel they are formulaic and just generally talentless (oh, and also because they called 'The Clash' sellouts). I don't really see the first as true - listen to 'Asylum' and 'Do they Owe us a Living?' and see if you think they only have one style of singing.
As for them being talentless as far as instruments go; who cares?? They certainly have as much ability as the Sex Pistols in that regard and there are much more important aspects that make up a Punk Band.
They are part of a subgenre called Anarcho-Punk, or sometimes peace-Punk because, you guessed it - they support anarchy and peace 'Fight War not Wars' was the title of one song. Crass quite likely takes the title of 'World's Most Political Band', for their actions both in and out of the studio, and their eventual downfall (after 10 years and a half dozen albums) were due in part to their direct political action.
A tape consisting of a faked conversation (cutting and pasting words from various speeches) of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan was traced back to the band, and they found it very hard to get permission to perform. Another reason for their dissolution was that the members themselves felt that they were becoming dissilusioned and bitter about the world, after their first violent song, 'You're already Dead' Pretty sad ending for a band that had always before promoted non-violent resistance.
