Christian Punk
May 12th 2006 09:15
Looking around the net, I had the most horrifying experience imaginable. That's right, I found a link to a 'Christian Punk' website.
This raised several questions in my mind.
First of all, do these people support or oppose mainstream culture?
Secondly, is their music a mix of Christian (talking about God) and Punk (angry and protestive) to make an and result of protesting about God?? because that just sounds like normal Punk to me
Although, its not an entirely stupid genre, I mean, have any of you actually read the Old Testament? If you haven't, then EvilBible will fill you in on the details. Just put a few nice bible quotes to a beat and you have a nice and angry Punk song. They're on to something, methinks.
Now, Wikipedia has a link to Christian Anarchism, which is essentially the belief that people needn't adhere to any moral, or legal codes; people may do what they want, and if they do something wrong, God will punish them. Thus, as long as God doesn't punish you, you are in the right.
Now, I'll stop simply hacking on them and actually provide reasons. Organised religion has been used as a system of control from (I'm no historian, if you're interested in history, go here) certainly from the Ancient Egyptian times. Now, when people are finally realising that they can worship God(s) from their own home these 'Christian Punks' spring up, paid for by churches to bring people back to blind obedience
Oh, and any Christian Punks who read this, please register and comment; I actually would like to know the answers to the questions i asked.
Peace

I respect artists for being christian. Eric Bibb is highly religious, and I love him and his music, but if he tried to claim he was something that he's not, it would be a different matter. Once again, plenty of music is original these days, Listen to JJJ.

I understand your views and please don't take any of this offensively, but to my understanding of this post is that along with the tag name of punk HAS to come also the rebellion of authority? I also knew a few "punkers" who had a problem with this and all I simply stated is that ..... it's just about the style of the genre. (which I have to admit has been overly used, non christian or not, and main-streamed to a sate of pure agonizing agony that agony could ever be agonized about! <__<;
But just erasing all the logic behind this, it's taking the qualities of the sound of punk and giving Christians such as I something to listen and rawk out to when Michael W. Smith and Third Day isn't really our fancy. And I'm not talking here about so called Pop-punk bands; the ones you may think churches pay to draw out emo kids and worshippers. (Although 'events' like these are fun at times,what they're usually really meant for, and should only be meant for, is just to give something for the youths of the church and anyone else to enjoy. Church doesn't always have to be about Bible studies and seriousness. Christians know how to have fun, too!) But really, what I'm talking about is the screaming hardcore junk that had me jumping into brutal mosh pits.( and some are not Christian bands either, but their lyrics reflect Our way of living) : Officer Negative (the old school albums, mind you), Thrice, Norma Jean, Haste The Day, Project 86, Demon Hunter, to name a few of them.
We don't or I know I don't to a "certain point" adopt the beliefs of Punk itself, so naturally, I'm avoiding bands whose lyrics that I don't agree with, but I do enjoy the sound, the pace,that neurotic feedback, and the hardcore screaming. I absolutely love it!!
So when you ever see, 'Christian Punk' listed anywhere, it's just about the sound as far as I'm concerned, nothing more. Although I can go as far as to say that we are 'Punks 4 Christ" because we do reject and, lets say, rebel against any authority the Ways of The World (symbolically speaking of not giving into what society tells us we HAVE to do) has once had on us. I realize this isn't the True Meaning behind the sub-culture of Punk so please don't gripe about it, but that's the view from my eyes. I'm not sure if any other Christian sees this way.
I'd be happy to try to answer any more questions you may have, II'll try to explain things the best that I can and to my knowledge. I hope this helped a bit, and thanks for taking the time to read!!
Shalom Aleichem!
