Sinead O Connor

August 22nd 2006 00:57
Sinead O Connor - Irish pop legend
Ntoice the shaved hair - that's her usual style
Irish pop and reggae singer Sinead O Connor, deserves a mention here. Well, I've already mentioned her a few times, but she needs her own article.

She's basically, in my opinion the female version of Bono, from U2 - Irish, controversial and similar sounding music. Although apparently she might disagree, criticising U2 on a number of issues.

I don't know that all of you will like her music, her voice is fairly soft, but emotional. I can't pick one or two favourite songs, but
"Mandinka"
"Nothing Compares 2 U" (Prince cover)
"The Emperor's New Clothes"
"Thank You For Hearing Me"
"This Is a Rebel Song"
"Troy"

Are all worth a listen

"Fire On Babylon"
"Bomb the Bass" (ft Benjamin Zepnanian)
"Black Boys on Mopeds"
"Streets of London (Ralph McTell cover)

Are absolutely brilliant.

She is one of the most controversial pop singers around, being hated in redneck America for her political views of sexual and racial equality and her desire to "rescue God from religion." If you ask me, that's a pretty good aim. Why the hell would a God demand that his worshippers go to a church and have a minister tell them what to think. You're religion is a personal thing, no-one can tell you how to worship.

On that note, she got in trouble from fundamentalist Christians for urging people to "fight the real enemy" ripping up a picture of the Pope on Saturday Night Live.

She also refused to play a show if she was forced to follow the American anthem, claiming that "will not go on stage after the national anthem of a country which imposes censorship on artists" Speaking of which, why the hell did Shihad temporarily change their name to Pacifier?? So it sounds like Jihad. Who cares? Would you expect the band 'Law' (I dunno if there is a band called law) to change their name because it sounds like War?

Anyhoo, I'm off before I start to ramble

Peace

Arcade Fire

August 16th 2006 00:06
Note: I know the last two posts would have made more sense in the other order, but meh.

Now, onto the Canadian indie rock ground known as Arcade Fire - pretty cool name by the way. I first heard about this band when I looked up lyrics for 'five years' by David Bowie, and saw someone credit it to this band. They have done a cover of the song, which starts out mediocre but by the end has become pretty good - though nothing on the Bowie or Placebo versions still.

Sly and the Family Stone

As promised, I give you Sly and the Family Stone, a late 60's, early 70's funk band, that had the best collection of afros around

Sly and the Family Stone, once the cover of Rolling Stone
Go the 'fro. The guy with red hair is their director at the time

Metal Machine Music

August 11th 2006 07:46
Metal Machine Music is an album by Lou Reed, which is widely considered to be the worst album he ever produced. Some people consider it a joke, or an attempt to fulfill a contractual obligation.

This album consisted entirely of guitar feedback played at different speeds, and Lou Reed claims that not only did he record it as a serious attempt at music, but that he purposefully placed allusions to classical piano songs in it.

The Pixies

August 9th 2006 07:46
The Pixies is a band which I think Scott has failed to review, which is disappointing considering their popularity. Shame on you Scott!

The Pixies are generally described as an alternative rock band, but they have strong punk influences, and greatly influenced bands as such as Nirvana. Their sound is characterised by quiet verses and loud choruses, and often dealt with 'dark' topics as such as incest or violence.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Scott is on exams this week, so I am filling in for him for ht next five posts. As I'm moving houses the posts may not be quite as detailed as normal. I'm going to start with a band review of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are a post-punk band that are renown for their originality, with Nick Cave being an interesting song writer.

Billy Bragg

English folk singer, working class man and politcal protestor, Billy Bragg, surely deserves a mention.

'New England' is one of his greatest songs, fast paced and rythmic, with great lyrics concerning the state of England at the time. Deffinately give that a listen

Machine Gun Fellatio

July 7th 2006 06:24
This is a tribute to a great Australian band that, despite the talent and groove of its members, fell apart for pretty much no reason in 2005.

The band isn't just part of one genre, they played alternative, dance, funk and electronica mostly.

Hooray for getting off topic more then usual. Chingon are a mexican rock band created by Robert Rodreiguez for his series of Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Desperado, El Mariachi.

The band has also had a song in the Kill Bill 2 soundtrack, Malagueña Salerosa which is a pretty aweome song.

Red Hot Chili Peppers

First of all, for those of you who think that the Chili Willies don't resemble punk at all, you're probably basing that on their recent albums, and the fans that only like those.

Their first 3 albums, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Freaky Styley and Uplift Mofo Party Plan contain a punk energy, and a rap style of singing that reminds me of Rage Against the Machine.

Nirvana

I haven't done a band review in ages, so I give you, Nirvana - underground grunge rockers and suddenly popular in the mainstream, a popularity which maintained even after Kurt Cobain's suicide.

Alas, Cobain is another famous artist that died due to a heroin addiction, the psychological effect more then the physical ones in this case

Rammstein

June 2nd 2006 03:20
Formed in East Berlin in 1994, Rammstein were no doubt affected greatly by the Berlin Wall, and its destruction in 1989. Out of this they developed a mistrust of Capitalism, especially in the commercialised American system. That is not to say that they support Stalinism, or any other offshoot of Communism. They were once accused of Nazi sympathies, but these have no apparent basis in fact; the cover of their album, ‘Herzeleid’, features the band topless, and because all of the members are German, they are accused of portraying the German people as a ‘Master Race’ can we grow up please?
