Pub Rock

September 29th 2006 01:29
For those who aren't in the know, Pub Rock is a genre of Music, it's rocky, but much heavier and harder then most rock, with very little polish on it. It came about in the 70's, at about the same time that Punk Rock took off in a big way.

Whilst this was mostly an English penomenon, it also took off in Australia, mostly because we just need to follow some country. And we call New Zealander's sheep...

Anyhoo, some of the most influential English Pub Rockers are 'The 101er's' (of which Joe Strummer from the Clash was a member), 'Kilburn and the High Roads' and 'Riff Raff' (containing Billy Bragg)

The 101er's
Very much on the poor side of things, Pub Rockers the 101er's bear a resemblance to many British Punk bands

Australian Pub Rock seemed to either be more sophisticated, as with 'Hunters and Collectors' or more AC/DC-esc bands.

Well, as a genre, it's pretty interesting. Fairly simple songs, due to the desire of the bands to seperate themselves from the progressive rock that was emerging at the time.

Peace

Anarchist's Cookbook

September 25th 2006 06:17
For those of you who don't know, firstly, stop living under a rock, and secondly, it's essentially a manual describing how to create improvised bombs and the like, and also criticism of the Vietnam War. It has been banned in many countries, but one must ask, is it right to do that?

The criticisms leveled at the book are as follows

Placebo Gig Review

September 21st 2006 02:59
Last Night Was the Placebo gig. Man it was good.

First thing that amazed me about the gig, was how easy it was to get to the front. I arrived an hour and a half before the doors opened, and I managed to get a spot in the second row, right in front of Molko. Some guys I knew (friend of a friend sorta thing) had lined up since 11, now that's dedicated.

Let Them Eat War

September 16th 2006 01:50
... Is the name of a song by 'Bad Religion', about which the Lead Singer said "[it is] based on the thought that the current administration puts so much money into this war while our own poor are struggling just to eat."

It makes sense, the US spends $441.6 Billion on 'Defence' as opposed to $367.0 billion on unemployment and welfare

Punks and Hippies

September 14th 2006 11:39
This may end as a 2 part post, due to my rambling nature. What I'm trying to work out is, why do so many Punks hate hippies?

I mean, both cultures are (with few exceptions) opposed to war and conservatism, facism, basically anything right wing. And believe me, that leaves the two groups with plenty of enemies, they don't need to be creating more

Gorillaz

September 13th 2006 04:05
Gorillaz band members, 2D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel

Man, I really love these guys. Not just because they combined hip hop with electronica, two genres I’m not fussed by, and actually got good music out of it. I also love them because, despite there being 4 cartoon members in the band, there are only 2 people behind them, Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett. These 2 have taken their anonymity to such an extent that they no longer even appear on stage for live performances, which obviously would be terrible if all bands did it, or if it was done badly, but the Gorillaz do it brilliantly.

JTV, OK GO and Celebrity Drug Disasters

September 10th 2006 03:58
For any non-Aussies, JJJ is Australia's only alternative radio station, although lately it has shifted towards hiphop... J Tv is the Tv version, surprisingly enough.

Well, yesterday was only the second time I've ever seen the show, it's pretty new. Well, after seeing an impressive filmclip by Thom Yorke, voted for by J TV viewers, I've decided that I like the tv show.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

September 7th 2006 07:22
Anyone seen this movie?? If not, you really should. Go to one of the crazy midnight screenings, where everyone cross-dresses and squirts water pistols at people. And if you know of a screening in or around Sydney, then let me know.

They sold out well before I got to the front of the line, and phone and internet lines were totally clogged. However, there are rumours (supported by Ticketek staff that a 3rd Sydney show, probably a day after the 2nd one, will be announced soon
